Process Clarity means Efficiency

The steel industry is currently undergoing a comprehensive concentration process, which is set to last for years to come and certainly won’t be sparing Germany. Since mid-term overcapacity is anticipated once again, high wage levels could result in some German plants running into difficulties.

Despite high demand, the steel industry has to cope with immense cost pressure: Low-cost suppliers from countries such as China and India force the price war while at the same time the price of iron raw materials is on the increase. The introduction of emissions certificates for CO2 output has resulted in additional costs for European companies. German companies also have to cope with the high electricity prices intrinsic to electric arc furnace steel production.

Stable processes ensure stable product quality

Process Clarity Guaranteed. A high degree of process control is a key factor in the industry, particularly in the manufacture of high alloy steel. Yet this can only be achieved if all processes are mapped with a high degree of clarity and the company is able to react promptly to process violations. High-performance MES systems can guarantee this process clarity: They capture the process data completely, enabling the compilation of comprehensive reports and analyses.

The LIMS System links Laboratory and Production. The steel industry is heavily reliant on well-established laboratory facilities for ensuring product quality. The manufacturing company therefore has to manage a number of important aspects, such as determining sulphur or carbon content both reliably and quickly – and, if necessary – implementing the necessary corrective action in the production process. This is absolutely vital to the introduction of new products, since the production processes need to be stabilised as quickly as possible.

Complete Data Integration in Process and Parts Manufacturing. Many steel plants house the steelmaking facilities, the foundry and the steel mill under one roof. This means an overlap of process and part production. Integrated steel plants therefore turn to MES solutions, enabling them a good overview of both types of production.
